The Woman & the Man in the Lord (1 Corinthians 11-16)

The Woman and the Man in the Lord

READ 1 Corinthians 11:11-12

What does it mean that “neither is the man without the woman, neither the woman without the man, in the Lord”?

It refers to the sealing of the man and the woman into an eternal family unit.

It refers to the definition of “Elohim” as a plural name: the need for a male and female god to be one if they are to be “in the Lord” and fulfill the measure of their ultimate eternal creation.

The sealing completes what is left incomplete upon entry into this mortal world – because it is “not good” to be alone or separate (see Genesis 2:18), either in this world or the eternities.

READ Moses 2:27 and Moses 6:9

When man was created in the “image of God”; what does that mean?

The image of God is male and female TOGETHER as one “God”.

God is the creator of infinite creations, which requires both the male and female god to accomplish; they have different traits that they bring to the task of creation; mortal men and women are the same on earth.

READ Genesis 1:3 and LoF 1:13-17

How does God create?

The speak Their words or thoughts.

They imagine or conceive Their creation into existence.

It is an act of faith – as a principle of power.

We might describe it as God imagining or conceiving light into existence and since we are made of light, it would be equally true that They conceive or imagine or “manifest” or “organize” us into life (I would say life not existence because we have always existed in one form or another).

READ D&C 93:30

If we, as intelligence, were conceived of solely by the Father, how can we ever be independent of Him?

We cannot; if we were the product of only one mind’s thought or word, we could never act independently of the one mind.

Everything about the conceived individual would be under the exclusive control of the one mind – they would be wholly predictable and subordinate to the single mind – they cannot take on a “life of their own.”

So how can we be independent in the sphere in which we’ve been placed by God?

Only when two entities are jointly conceiving an individual intelligence does it become possible for the individual conceived to be independent of control.

So long as both gods have input, neither one can fully control what the third personality will choose to do – in fact, this dynamic introduces the element of choice for the third.

“God” means “Elohim” which is plural = the image of God is the male and female God.

But the last critical step of the process happens when that intelligence accepts that right of self-determination and makes a choice freely – only then do they exist as an independent entity (see also 2 Nephi 2:13-14, 26), regardless of the fact that they may have existed previously as a dependent entity.

Why is Elohim a plural name for God?

It is absolutely essential to the process of “creation” or “conceiving” for God the Father to have a female consort or Mother God.  When the Father and Mother hold the same thought (or word or intelligence) together, with faith in the existence of this new creation, while neither one is fully controlling the individual intelligence, then existence is possible – that new individual can then make their own choices to act and not be acted upon as a puppet.

Because they are “one”, they are called by a single name (Elohim) but they are two entities because they must choose to act as one but be two, to create the dynamic just described.  “God” is two.

For the mortal man, having a wife and being able to ascend to the Lord‘s presence are not unrelated. They are instead, intimately connected.  We must be in the image of God – completed as a “person” – neither the man without the woman or the woman without the man, in the Lord.  Mortals are saved in a union designed, like God, to produce eternal progeny.

Gifts of the Spirit

READ 1 Corinthians 12:1, 4-11

Why are gifts of the Spirit given?

To bless the lives of other Saints (v7).

To show the presence of the light of heaven.

As an “earnest money” of the inheritance of light to be received later, in fullness.

To prove to the individual experiencing them, that they are in covenant and following in the right Way.

READ TPJS 271:4 and 272:2

Can gifts of the Spirit come without the Holy Ghost?

No (see TPJS 272:2).

They are among the “diversities of gifts” but the same Spirit.

READ 1 Corinthians 12:14, 18-20, 25-26

Is there a body part that is so preeminent that it can exist without the rest?

Not outside of science fiction.

The brain needs the heart, etc.

Why does God give different gifts to different people?

So all will be valued as part of the “body of Christ”.

So all will have some part to play – all have some opportunity to contribute to the edification or enabling of the rest.

The Gift of Charity

READ 1 Corinthians 12:31-1 Corinthians 13:3

Joseph Smith said we are only saved as quickly as we gain saving knowledge – which means to know we’ve been sealed up to Eternal Life by the voice of God Himself; understanding the mysteries enables you to walk back into God’s presence; being able to move mountains shows you’ve been given the High Priesthood After the Order of the Son of God with its accompanying sealing power… So why, if we gain all of those things but do not have charity, are we “nothing” and will “fail” (v8)?

We have become a danger to the Universe – we have become Perdition and a Satan.

Somehow we have managed to attain to the blessings of God’s eternal inheritance without becoming as He is – a God of love; implied is that we’ve chosen to betray God after we’ve been following Him and know Him.

Without God, we are truly nothing… good.

READ 1 Corinthians 13:4-10

How do these verses typify how Christ works with us?

He does not compel – rather He invites people to follow Him, He “draws” men to Him.

He is meek – He meets us where we are and does not force His agenda on us – He honors our agency.

He has already borne all things for us but He continues to minister to us, largely unseen – and He will continue to minister in patience until the last day.

He became the greatest by suffering and serving the most, and despite being God, He will speak to us in plain humility, as one man speaks to another.

In the garden and on the cross, it was His love for us and for His Father and Mother that kept Him going to the bitter end, despite wanting to “let the cup pass from Him” – He did not fail us.

READ John 13:34-35

Why is love the Great Sign of the true follower of Christ?

He told us that if we love Him, we’ll keep His commandments – with loving others being the preeminent commandment to keep.

We emulate what we love, so if Christ has our heart, all we want – with our whole souls – is to be like Him and to do things that please Him – and that means to love as He loved (see also John 15:9-13).

As we are born of the Spirit and continue through the Lord’s Wilderness to the Tree of Life to partake of the Fruit by obedience to His commandments, we will be filled with light and glory, and we will begin to resonate at a higher frequency – love vibrates at a high frequency while fear vibrates at a low frequency – think about energy, heat, speed, and quickening.

Everything He did was due to His love for us – and He said, “be even as I am” – in other words, love others as I love you if you will be like me.

READ 1 Corinthians 13:11-13

What is the glass we look through darkly?

The veil between this world and the unseen world.

The veil between the mortal timebound universe and the heavens where God is outside of time.

When will we know as we are known?

When we rend the veil and are face to face with our Lord.

When we’ve spent enough time with Him in various circumstances to know Him as He knows us.

It DOES NOT SAY “when we die”.

This suggests that Paul was still continuing his journey back to the Lord to be sealed up to Eternal Life, even though he had already seen Him at least once by this point; implied is that just seeing the Lord – even in person – is not the end of the journey.

Why is charity the greatest of the three?

Because it encapsulates, in a word, who or what God is.

He exists to bring to pass the immortality and eternal life of others, and He does it through condescension and eternal sacrifice.

Faith and hope are “rungs on the ladder” to charity.

The Reality of the Resurrection

READ 1 Corinthians 15:3-8

How do we know the resurrection happened?

The testimony of witnesses.

When we feel the wounds of the Lord for ourselves in the flesh.

What is the problem with the testimony of witnesses?

They could be lying (a conspiracy, since there are so many named).

They could be mistaken or tricked.

They could be insane.

What does a witness do for you?

It introduces an idea (in this case): Christ rose from the dead.

It introduces the possibility that there is proof: Others say they have seen Him and felt tokens that prove it is Jesus of Nazareth who was crucified.

It can inspire you to find out for yourself if the witness is true.

Religion and the spiritual experiences that come with it are all intensely personal and anecdotal.  That is the point – God wants to entice you to find Him yourself (see LoF 2:54-56).

Can it be proven that Christ rose from the dead?

Yes; He can actually come to you during your mortal life and you can feel the prints of the nails for yourself - through the mortal senses and the accompanying witness of the Holy Spirit, you can know He lives.

Then you can say “I know of a surety and bear record that it was He that came!” – (see 3 Nephi 11:14-15).

There is a reason that a perfect God with a resurrected body would chose to retain the ugly, marring, physical marks of death which can be felt by a mortal with a telestial body of flesh and blood.

Ultimately, He will appear to all those who remain on the earth when He comes in fire and glory.

READ 1 Corinthians 15:21-22

What is the relationship between Adam and Christ?

Everything that consequentially went wrong with the Earth after the Fall of Adam is redeemed and reclaimed by Christ through His Atonement and Resurrection.

Adam was the first man and Christ was the “worm” or “least of all” who was made guilty of all of the sins of all mankind.

Adam transgressed and fell, becoming subject to death while Christ kept all of the commandments and triumphed over death and hell.

Christ is the Son of God and Adam is His Archangel, Michael.

READ 1 Corinthians 15:40-44

What is Paul teaching us that we will receive in the resurrection?

A physical, spiritual (refined with light) body that is incorruptible.

But not all of these bodies are the same – some are quickened by a Celestial glory (able to stand in the presence of the Father/Elohim), some by a Terrestrial glory (able to stand in the presence of the Son), and some a Telestial glory (unable to stand in the presence of Gods without transfiguration and protection).

While there are “kingdoms” where those with certain kinds of bodies can dwell, Paul refers to the bodies themselves as of different glories.

READ D&C 130:18-21

How does one receive one kind of body or glory over another?

It depends on how much intelligence or knowledge they gathered to themselves in this life.

Which light depends on what they were diligently doing and who they were obedient to: were they keeping God’s laws that they might receive the accompanying blessings or following after their own desires or someone else’s; were they abiding by the principles of eternal light or not.

Contention and Division in the Church

READ 1 Corinthians 1:10-13

What is happening in the Corinthian church?

They are arguing over doctrine; they are converts from a Hellenized culture that loves philosophy and debate.

The devil is sowing the spirit of contention amongst them – they are showing enmity toward each other.

Pride is the root cause of enmity.

How do a group of people become joined in the same mind and all speak the same thing?

The Holy Spirit is the “mind of God” – when you truly receive the Gift of the Holy Ghost and baptism of fire, you begin to be filled with that same Spirit, glory or mind as the Father and Son are (see LoF 5:2-3).

When each individual comes unto Christ separately, they come together in “mind” or “thought”; the words and actions that then flow from them are the “same” or are unified because they have all experienced the same saving knowledge and have received the same “mind” or Spirit.

Paul is NOT asking them to create a creed of belief, or (heaven forbid) a standard of behavior – that was what the Law was all about.

He wants them to come unto Christ themselves so no one need say “know ye the Lord” because they all will know Him, from the least to the greatest (see D&C 84:98).

Who are Paul, Apollos, and Cephas (Peter)?

Leaders, Apostles and missionaries in the Church (see 1 Cor 3:5-6).

What does it mean to be “of Paul” or “of Peter”?

It means to idolize them.

To look to them exclusively – they are your doctrinal expert of choice.

It means to pit the various prophets/apostles against each other doctrinally and debate the gospel like a scholar; implied is that the idol is not there in the room to clarify the truth.

Subtly, they are looking to them for salvation – the leader or prophet who will “save” them if followed slavishly because they (the idol) have all of the truth (there is nothing more to learn from anyone else and everything said by the prophet is correct).

READ D&C 76:98-101

What happens to those who say they are “of” the prophets?

They will inherit the Telestial kingdom.

They have not received the gospel (covenant) themselves but were relying on another man to save them.

They did not receive THE testimony of Christ – they did not know Him so He did not know them (which is eternal life, to know Christ).

They did not heed the words of those prophets they espouse, because they did not take upon themselves the terms of the everlasting covenant.

They are like the children of Israel telling Moses to go up on the Mount to talk to God on their behalf – they prefer to rely on a man and “follow the prophet” instead of coming to Christ themselves (see D&C 84:23-24 and Exodus 19:18-21).

READ TPJS 266:2

“President Joseph Smith read the 14th chapter of Ezekiel—said the Lord had declared by the Prophet, that the people should each one stand for himself, and depend on no man or men in that state of corruption of the Jewish church—that righteous persons could only deliver their own souls —applied it to the present state of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints—said if the people departed from the Lord, they must fall—that they were depending on the Prophet, hence were darkened in their minds, in consequence of neglecting the duties devolving upon themselves, envious towards the innocent, while they afflict the virtuous with their shafts of envy.”

What happens if the people depend on the prophet?

Their minds will be darkened.

Ultimately, they are idolaters because they’ve put a man between them and God; they have enough faith to hear and believe the man but not God; they will only inherit telestial glory (see D&C 76:99-101).

Who is the only one that can “deliver” your soul to be saved?

You.

True prophets can bear testimony to truth (God’s objectives, nature and plan).

Prophets can witness that they have stood again in God’s presence and that you can too, if you follow the same path laid out by God and taught by the prophet who has successfully walked that path (however, this can get confusing because as we are all so different and God interacts with us where we are, the path that one might take might look radically different than the path God will lead another along).

Prophets deliver messages directly from God’s mouth, having stood in His presence.

Prophets can provide guidance regarding the way back to God and the challenges that may stand in the way.

But YOU MUST WALK THE PATH back to God yourself.  You stand at the veil alone.

The World’s Wisdom

READ 1 Corinthians 1:18-20 and 26-28 (include JST)

Why does God choose the weak of the earth?

They are meek and teachable.

They do not trust in the arm of the flesh.

God can work through them because they are not continually trying to “steady the ark” because they think they know better or they have their own agenda.

How will God destroy the wisdom of the wise?

He will reveal the truth.  The truth (things are they really are, were and will be – D&C 93:24) will destroy all falsehood when it is made known publicly.

Light shines and the darkness flees – one can “see” all things in the light, while things can be hidden or manipulated in the dark.

READ 1 Corinthians 2:3-5

Remember, Paul was a Diaspora Jew, born and educated in Hellenized Turkey before going to Jerusalem to learn at the feet of the greatest Pharisees of Israel, where he became their greatest student.

Why does Paul fear to teach these Greeks?  Why does he not use enticing words or rational arguments with them – surely he could out debate them (as he used to do with the Jewish scholars)?

He knows that nothing but the Spirit and the power of God will cause in them a personal conversion that will remain in them as long as they are faithful to God.

He is wary or “fearful” of setting himself up as a light or doctrinal authority to them – knowing that, as Gentiles, they are especially liable to idolize him as a “benefactor” and put him between them and God (see Luke 22:25).

He is also fearful that they will be convinced by a good argument but that without connecting personally to God, it will be a testimony planted in “stony ground” which will die in the heat of the day of the mortal test (see Matthew 13:1-8).

READ 1 Corinthians 2:7-11

What is the wisdom of God that is hidden in a mystery?

It is that God is a perfected man who sits enthroned in the Heavens (see TPJS 390:2).

And that mankind can become as God is (TPJS 391:2).

And what each man/woman must do to get there and where they are on the “ladder” (TPJS 392:2).

READ 1 Corinthians 2:14

Why does the natural man think these things are foolishness?

Finite, mortal minds cannot comprehend all things unless they are quickened and filled with light, which if they will not come unto Christ, their minds will be darkened to the things of God, which will seem like foolishness to them.

They don’t align with man’s current reasoning and can’t be proven through man’s scientific process.

READ 1 Corinthians 3:18-23

Why is man’s wisdom foolishness?

Because he thinks it’s all about what he can see, know, do, have, and control in front of him. He wants to be the “god of this world” – not realizing it is a “Telestial Kingdom” or lone and dreary world and not worth being god of, as it currently stands.

He doesn’t understand the “mysteries of Godliness” and will not abide by the principles of righteousness upon which they are handled (see D&C 121:36) – the “wise” natural man is missing the whole point of this existence.

You Are the Temple of God

READ 1 Corinthians 3:1-3

Why can’t Paul speak “unto spiritual” things with the Corinthian saints?

They have not made themselves ready.

Their minds are still darkened – they cannot understand the things of God because they must be filled with sufficient intelligence/light/glory/spirit to comprehend them.

God is patient with us but we constrain what He can give us by our spiritual preparation (or lack thereof) and again by what we do with it when given.

READ 1 Corinthians 3:13-15

What is the test of this life?

Acquiring light (or God’s glory, intelligence, truth, Spirit, fire).

Can we stand in the firey presence of God and His glory or will our life’s work (what we have become) be consumed in it.

What does it mean that even if our life’s work shall be burned that we will “suffer loss” but shall be saved?

We cannot be destroyed – the mind or intelligence which man possesses is co-equal with God Himself; intelligence is eternal and exists upon a self-existent principle (see TPJS 396 & 397).

Even sons of Perdition will receive a body but everyone else will be added upon to a greater or lesser degree based on the amount of intelligence/light we gathered in this mortal life; so we shall be “saved” although not necessarily exalted… at least not in this round of creation or eternity… (see D&C 76:4 and D&C 132:22-24).

READ 1 Corinthians 3:16-17, 1 Corinthians 6:19-20, and 2 Corinthians 6:16

What is a temple?

It is a structure which houses something.

It is set apart from the profane world or made holy.

It is used for worship.

It is the place where the mysteries of God are taught.

It is where God will come and abide with man.

It is the House of God.

What does it mean that our bodies are the Temple of God?

He has given us a “tabernacle” or “temple” of clay to live in while on earth (see D&C 93:33-35), an “avatar”.

He asks that we not defile the body but make it holy through our obedience to His commandments, which will fill us with light/spirit.

The body is an opportunity to worship our God – what we choose to think about, say, do and love while in the body tells us which God we truly worship.

The Lord desires to teach us the mysteries of Godliness, which cannot truly be taught so as to be comprehended by a man from another man, but must be taught by God to each of us through His Spirit, angelic messengers or the Lord Himself (see 2 Nephi 32:2-7), so that we will be filled with light and able to comprehend what is being taught; in addition, these mysteries are only as good to us as the opportunity we have to use them – i.e. if we do not have our own personal promise directly from God, and authority to rend the veil and enter His rest (see Helaman 10:4-10), then all we have is spiritual voyeurism or titillation if a man teaches us these things, because we have no right or ability to actually use them – this comes only from God.

The body can host the Holy Ghost, a member of the Godhead (see John 14:16).  And if your temple is holy, this “First Comforter” will be joined by Christ and eventually the Father, who will make themselves known to you and abide with you (see John 14:18, 20-21, 23 and D&C 130:3); what this “Holy Ghost” is (and why “He” is not featured in the Temple ceremony at all but Michael/Adam/we are) is an interesting subject to consider further, as is the question of how one’s own “ghost” becomes “holy”.

You can become part of the House or Family of God when you are adopted as His Son or Daughter and sealed up to Eternal Life by the Father, through the Testimony and Atonement of the Son (see Moses 1:4, Psalm 2:7, and D&C 88:75).

What does it mean that we are not “our own”?

He created our bodies from materials/elements that He organized and emanate from Him/are part of His being.

He is lending us breath and preserves us from day to day (Mosiah 2:21).

And when we are resurrected, that will be Him, too (as we have not yet attained to the resurrection ourselves).

Because He paid for these materials – suffering all that a God could suffer to redeem them.

Under what conditions does the Spirit of God dwell in us?

Ultimately, the Spirit of God dwells in us when we are declared “holy” by God (see Exodus 3:5 in the context of Moses 1:4).

The true temple of God is the redeemed individual – wherever Moses stood it was holy ground because he was holy, having been redeemed from the fall by being taken back into the presence of God and pronounced clean (see Ether 3:13 and D&C 88:75).

In the meantime, the Spirit begins to dwell in us and sanctify us when we are born of the Spirit and receive the Baptism of Fire, although we may grieve and lose the Spirit through our behavior and must quickly repent to receive it back again.

We can become the “House of God” with His Spirit dwelling within us.  You can become a holy place He can and will visit from time to time.  He will take up His abode with you.  Use the Temple rites and other means to cleanse yourself and separate yourself from the world.  Make yourself “sacred space” which is set apart from the world, behind a veil, where the Spirit of the Lord is unrestrained.  The Temple rites apply the power of the Atonement of Jesus Christ to cleanse, purify, wash, anoint, clothe and endow you with power.

READ 1 Corinthians 6:9-11

Who will not inherit the Kingdom of God?

Sinners.

What words of hope does Paul give us?

Such were some of you, but…

Ye are washed.

Ye are sanctified.

Ye are justified.

… Through Christ and His Spirit.

“If we come unto Him with a broken heart and a contrite spirit, sacrificing our whole soul on His altar, laying down the sins and temptations which do so easily beset us, with faith believing that He will save us, God will be able to plug the leaks, repair the hinge and fix the broken window. He really does have a house of order, or better put, He will only enter a temple that is holy, which temple ye are. (1 Cor. 3: 17) It's not built by human hands. It was built by God in the womb of your mother and you were endowed with it when you took your first breath. You are wearing it now - it is His temple. The Lord whom ye seek shall suddenly come to his temple (see Malachi 3:1). But it must not be defiled.”

In sheep’s clothing (see Matthew 7:15), otherwise they would be quickly rebuffed and would not be allowed to enter the Church and gain influence.

They appear to be “good members” – they keep the commandments (outward) and likely become leaders in the Church due to their talents.

How is Paul’s prophesy about apostasy in Ephesus reflected in the recipe for apostasy that we’ve discussed in previous posts?

Paul, a true messenger (he has stood in the presence of God and has a message from God) is gone from them.

He is replaced by subtle purveyors of priestcraft from within the current leadership of the Church – they act as stewards at first (the word “steward” implies that the “true king” is not in residence).

They reinterpret the true doctrine to become popular with the world and with Saints that are still connected to the world (which must have been a majority, otherwise why pander to them?  Actually, one answer is that the leaders were connected to the world and wanted to influence the Church to become more like they were and adopt their personal beliefs).

It is an inside job and was already in progress during Paul’s ministry – meaning the wholesale “apostasy” of the historic Christian Church started while the real apostles were still alive.

Background for the Letter to the Galatians

The letter to the Galatian branches was written sometime between 48 and 58AD – more likely after the Great Jerusalem Council where the Judaizers doctrine of the need for Gentiles to convert to Judaism and be circumcised first, before becoming “Christian”, was denounced.  The Galatian branches were in modern Turkey and spanned from modern Ankara (called Ancyra anciently) in the north to Antioch towards the south.

READ Galatians 1:6-8 and Galatians 2:3-4 and 14

What is the nature of the apostasy that has occurred in the Turkish branches?

The Judaizers have come from Jerusalem after Paul taught and baptized many pagans in what is now Turkey, and have convinced them that they should be circumcised and live the Law of Moses, as a part of the Christian religion – because the “Christian religion” is really the Jewish religion.

How Is A Person Justified?

READ Galatians 2:16

What does it mean to be justified?

To be declared “righteous”.

To be acquitted/declared innocent of ALL charges (it is a “court room” term).

The justified have committed no sins; or are looked upon as though they had never committed sin – they “never did it” rather than “they did it and paid their debt to society”.

READ D&C 88:36-39, Romans 3:10 and Alma 42:25

What are the principles in play when someone is declared “just”?

There are laws given (D&C 88:36).

There are certain bounds and conditions to all laws (D&C 88:38).

If we violate the conditions, we have broken the law and are no longer just or justified (D&C 88:39).

Everyone breaks the law or sins (Romans 3:10).

Payment must be made for broken law (Alma 42:25); there are natural consequences to breaking laws – and there may also be imposed penalties to enable karma to be satisfied.

If someone pays the complete penalty for all their sins (broken laws), are they now justified?

No, they are still guilty of breaking the law.

But they have now paid the price for disobedience.

They are “ex-cons” who have “served their time” and have “not sinned recently”.

They are not “justified” or innocent of ever having broken the law in the first place.

Who then is justified?

Jesus Christ.

No one else is justified by the works of the Law.

Those who, through covenant and sacrifice, exercise faith in Jesus Christ unto salvation (see Romans 3:24 JST, 2 Nephi 9:21, Alma 42:14-15) are also justified, due to the terms of the atoning sacrifice.

The question changes from “can I keep all of the commandments all of the time” to “can I become one with a perfect Savior”.

But, interestingly, keeping all the commandments all the time or in other words being perfect as Christ is perfect or becoming precisely as Christ is and nothing else is absolutely required of salvation (see LoF 7:9); however, it is not expected that we ascend to that level of perfection in this life – hence the need to be justified; however, as God gives us no commandments we cannot keep, we are expected to keep the commandments He has given us here and now.

What is the Relationship between the Law and the Gospel Covenant?

READ Galatians 3:10-11 and 3

How was the Law designed to save someone?

They had to keep all of the commandments all of the time or they were not justified by the Law – they were cursed because they broke the Law.

In reality, the Law was not designed to save anyone – it was impossible for all but Christ to keep it.

READ Galatians 3:19-21 (including JST Appendix) and 24-25

What was the purpose of the Law?

The Law was (and continues to be…) a “schoolmaster” to bring us to Christ.

The Law is the set of terrestrial rules designed to bring our conduct into alignment with God’s conduct.

As we act in obedience to God’s commandments (i.e. act as He does), we are filled with more light/glory/intelligence/truth.

As we are filled with more light, we are more likely to see our need for repentance/change and to desire to be righteous “naturally” or in other words, to lay our wills/whole souls on the Lord’s altar in sacrifice, that we might receive a mighty change of heart and be filled with His Spirit – receiving the Baptism of Fire, desiring to do His works ourselves – so that they are no longer imposed from outside by a set of rules, but they have become the desires of our hearts.

And as the Aaronic Priesthood holds the keys to the ministering of angels, who hold the required priesthood needed to give the Gift of the Holy Ghost/Baptism of Fire, the Law could/can lead any individual back into the presence of Christ if they follow the path taught them by the Spirit and angelic ministers (as taught over and over in the Book of Mormon – as they were living under the Law from 1 Nephi to 3 Nephi 11).

READ Galatians 3:17

Why was the Law of Moses given if the Gospel Covenant had previously been given to Abraham – and the line of Fathers from Adam to Shem before him?

Because the Children of Israel refused to come unto Jehovah themselves but sent Moses instead (see D&C 84:19-24 and Exodus 20:18-21).

Which caused them to lose the High Priesthood which would have enabled each of them to come into the presence of God (see D&C 84:25-27).

It is always up to us – how much light and truth will we choose to accept?

It is not that God’s presence is so terrible that it drives mortals from Him – as Moses and Joseph Smith, for example, approached Him successfully.  However, God’s presence makes every person evaluate who and what they are.  Although we can lie to ourselves about how good we are, when we are in His presence we can no longer deceive ourselves – the difference between our “ragged righteousness” and His light, glory and intelligence is too obvious.  He withdraws Himself if we are not ready – that is how His “wrath” is manifested – because He desires to be one with us.  If He withdraws Himself from you, that should be felt keenly as an absence and rejection but it may also be a mercy, because to be in His presence unprepared is to be racked with a consciousness of guilt and misery (Mormon 9:3-5) and the very real possibility of incineration.  To the extent man has confidence in the presence of the Lord, it is wholly derived from Him, as He must decree us forgiven and clean, but we must want to be with Him because we love Him and then lay our whole souls at His feet in sacrifice.

The Law of Adoption

READ Galatians 3:29-Galatians 4:7

What does it mean to be “Abraham’s seed”?

It means to have a part in the new and everlasting covenant that was restored to Abraham by God after the line of Patriarchs ended with Shem/Melchizedek’s city being translated and Abraham’s forefathers’ apostasy.

That includes first accepting the gospel through faith, repentance and baptism; second, receiving the baptism of fire/birth of the spirit; third, sacrificing and being tried at all hazards while seeking to be obedient and filled with more light/intelligence (sanctified); then receiving calling and election, second comforter and the eternal sealing in the Father’s heavenly temple.

Part of these latter ordinances include being sealed to the “fathers in heaven” or “fathers in eternal glory” (see TPJS 380-383), or Abraham, and be “adopted” by him as a “seed” or legitimate descendent – this could be by being sealed to Joseph Smith as his seed, who is then sealed up the line.

The principle here is to create the family or House of God, all of whom have entered the presence/rest of the Lord in this life and have been sealed up to Eternal Life.

In this we become “sons of God”, as the new and everlasting covenant is for that purpose – that we ultimately become Christ’s sons and daughters, spiritually reborn, redeemed and sealed to Him.

Christian Liberty

READ Galatians 5:1, 13-14

What is the “liberty wherewith Christ hath made us free”?

Christ gives us liberty from sin and death.

Christ gives us the liberty to choose – agency.

Christ gives us the liberty live by the “Spirit” not just the “Law”.

What is the difference between living by the Spirit vs the Law?

Living by the Spirit is harder than living by the Law.

Harder because it requires your heart and soul to be sacrificed while living the Law is much more about outward performance.

Harder because it requires us to love unconditionally, like Christ did.

Harder because it requires that we commune with God to obtain and follow His will moment to moment (not just to read and follow a set of rules from a book).

Harder because it requires us to use our own judgement based on revelation that we’ve received and sanctification that we’ve experienced to “test” us – did we learn the lessons?  Have we become what is required?  What lack we yet?

Harder because righteousness (following God’s will) is much more difficult than just being virtuous (i.e. Nephi’s killing of Laban was “righteous” but not “virtuous”) – He will customize trials for us to refine us in a very personal and tailored “furnace of affliction”.

Fruits of the Spirit

READ Galatians 5:22-25

What does “fruit of the Spirit” mean?

These are traits and behaviors that “flow” from those who have connected with the Spirit and received the baptism of fire.

They are not manufactured behaviors – fruit come naturally from a tree, they are not produced separately in a test-tube.

You cannot “work” on your fruits; you can only seek after the Spirit and sacrifice what is required to receive it.

What may be confusing is that those who are seeking after the birth of the Spirit attempt to act in line with these behaviors; the difference is that they are “white-knuckling” it to one degree or another; they are choosing to act that way vs. naturally being that way.
